Fish that swim around your icons, snow that settles on them, light that drifts behind them. A calm, living world on your Mac's desktop, quiet enough to work over all day.
Worlds know where your desktop icons are. Koi glide around them, butterflies rest on them, snow piles up on top. Move an icon and the world moves with it.
A world stops completely while the desktop is covered, slows down on battery or when the Mac is warm, and keeps itself to about 5% of the processor while you look at it.
Worlds can't reach the internet or open files. They learn where icons are, never what they're called, and nothing about your desktop leaves your Mac.
Northern lights folding slowly over a painted arctic lake. Now and then a spirit drifts through like a mirage, the light bending around it: in play mode, click it to catch it. Very rarely one shows its true form. Catch all seventeen to become Keeper of the Aurora.
A frozen lake under the moon where small spirit creatures come out to play, a few at a time. They wander the ice, stop to look round and fade away; come near and they bolt. In play mode, pick up the moon and move it.
A painted lotus pond that goes through the day hour by hour, never in a hurry. Rest your hand and the water turns to a mirror, fish gather and a dragonfly lands on your pointer; rush and they slip away. The heron waits and now and then strikes. Every hour a lotus blooms and fades.
A painted garden pond that turns with the seasons. Kohaku, Showa, Kujaku, Ogon and Tancho koi glide over its floor and under water lilies, each with a name, growing as you feed it. In play mode click to drop food, hold to float a lily, drag to skip a pebble; the leaf button picks the floor.
A painted alpine valley with a snowman who watches your cursor. Snow falls, swirls around the mouse and settles on your icons. In play mode, one click starts a snowball fight, three a side, until one team melts; click the snow to build more snowmen, or drag the big one anywhere.
The midnight zone: lanternfish and hatchetfish school past your icons, a red crown jelly and a crystal jelly pulse upward, an anglerfish trails its glowing lure, a dragonfish and a vampire squid hunt alone and a dumbo octopus glides by, under slowly falling marine snow.
A sunny watercolour garden seen from above. Monarchs, blues, brimstones and swallowtails wander between your icons and like to rest on your folders. A Shiba puppy runs after your cursor and sends them fluttering.
Liquids of the world in watercolour: a steaming hot spring, ink waves lined with gold, slow lava, a sunlit cenote, salt pools. Each moves its own way. Move the cursor across it and rings spread; in play mode click to drop one, and the leaf button picks another painting.
A woodblock-print spring: a cherry branch over a misty lake below a snowy peak. Petals drift down and rest a while on your icons.
A painted autumn: a mountain lake under red maples, a cottage in the misty hills, or a lake in ink wash (in play mode the leaf button at a corner picks one). Maple leaves tumble in a warm October wind and pile up on your icons.
Steady rain streaking down behind your icons, with a dim overcast sky that darkens at night.
A summer meadow after dusk. Fireflies drift through the grass, glow softly and keep clear of your icons.
A single incense stick on a low wooden table in a quiet room; its smoke rises, curls and folds as you work. Lamplight by night, window light by day.
